Теберда
В
Карачаевске, там, где река Теберда впадает в Кубань, начинается долина Теберды (в переводе с карачаевского Божий дар). Теберда – это среднегорный и высокогорный район надёжно защищенный от ветра и тумана скалистым и боковым хребтами. Ветровой режим в Теберде особый: фёны и горнодолинные ветры приносят чистый воздух с гор и тёплые воздушные массы с Чёрного моря, до которого отсюда совсем недалеко. Замкнутость долины Теберды влияет не только на температуру, но и на влажность. Климат определяется горным рельефом, довольно низким атмосферным давлением, интенсивной солнечной радиацией, незначительной облачностью, относительно тёплой зимой и прохладным летом. С незапамятных времён Теберда была одним из важнейших торговых путей, ведущих с Черноморского побережья в степи Северного Кавказа. Клухорский перевал, на котором расположено одноименное озеро, являющееся истоком речки Клухор — одного из притоков Теберды, упоминается греческим ученым Страбоном (I в. до н.э.). В летнее время этим путём пользовались купцы из Диоскурии, а затем и византийцы, экспортировавшие аланам через Клухорский перевал, вместе с товарами, христианскую веру. Немым свидетелем этих времён служит Сентинский храм, построенный на отроге горного хребта на левом берегу реки, в 18 км от Карачаевска. Он высится над аулом Нижняя Теберда («Сынты» по-карачаевски). Как и для других, аналогичных этой аланских святынь, для него характерна крестово-купольная архитектура. Храм представляет собой композицию в виде «чистого» креста. Здание сложено из тщательно отёсаных блоков и плит песчаника на известковом растворе. Техника кладки Сентинского храма отличается замечательной чистотой и прочностью. Он прекрасно сохранился, не дав ни одной трещины. На стенах сохранились следы фресковой росписи, датированной XI в. Длина здания без апсиды равная его ширине – 8 м, высота от пола до пяты купола – 10м. Храм и мавзолей рядом с ним построены на платформе, укреплённой каменной кладкой и повторяющей контуры скального отрога. В середине XVIII в. на подступах к храму был построен женский монастырь, ныне не действующий. Многочисленные постройки монастыря хорошо сохранились. Развалины одного из крупнейших городов Алании находятся близ аула Верхняя Теберда. Город состоял из двух крепостей и примыкавших к ним поселений. Великолепная, вымощенная каменными плитами трасса караванного пути делила его на две части. У дороги находились железоплавильные и кузнечные мастерские. Фрагментарно сохранились остатки крепостных стен, ирригационных сооружений, террасного земледелия.
После разорительных нашествий монголо-татар и Тамерлана долина Теберды опустела. Заселяться она начала с XVII в. выходцами из Большого Карачая. Так, в долине реки Джамагат (правый приток Теберды) возник аул Джамагат, на том же месте, где несколько столетий до этого располагался один из аланских городов. Аул Джамагат славился своим богатством, лихими наездниками, слава о которых шла по всему Кавказу. Жители его занимались животноводством, сеяли ячмень и пшеницу, вели оживлённую торговлю. В самом начале XIX столетия в долину из-за Клухора была завезена чума, истребившая большую часть жителей.
